Vitamin B3 (Niacin)
Niacin is one of many B vitamins that helps to regulate the normal function of the nervous system, which is vital for human health before, during and after pregnancy.
The nervous system helps to control and co-ordinate everything from your heartbeat to your emotions. Made up of the brain, spinal cord and nerves, this complex system is responsible for movement, balance, how we process the world (the senses) and even the ability to think.
The additional need for niacin during pregnancy is also caused by the increased energy intake of the expectant mother. With many pregnant women effectively ‘eating for two’, niacin helps to ensure that this extra food can be properly metabolised and stored as usable energy.
